Come celebrate spring with the TCA Big Band & VocalAires as they present “Love Notes” Sunday, May 22 at 4 pm. This year’s annual spring concert will feature music of A & M Records recording artists, including Herb Albert, Burt Bacharach, Chuck Mangione, and more.
A & M Records was co-founded in 1962 by trumpeter and band leader, Herb Alpert, and recording executive, Jerry Moss. Throughout its storied history, the label produced recordings for a broad range of artists including Burt Bacharach, Liza Minnelli, The Carpenters, Carole King, Herb Alpert & Tijuana Brass, Quincy Jones, Chuck Mangione, Sting, The Police, Janet Jackson, and Sheryl Crow. TCA Big Band & VocalAires will perform music from some of these great artists and more, as they pay homage to the history and artistry of A & M Records. Herb Alpert and his amazing Tijuana Brass were prolific instrumentalists, and produced top-ten hits in three different decades with songs such as Java, A Taste of Honey, and Rise. The TCA Big Band & VocalAires’ selections will include a fun instrumental version of Tijuana Taxi, and a vocal, This Girl’s in Love, which was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and recorded by Herb. It was originally released as, This Guy’s in Love, and was sung by Alpert. It became his first #1 hit. Patrons will also hear music from the Burt Bacharach collection, whose sixty-plus year career has led him to collaborate with artists such as Dionne Warwick, Perry Como, The Carpenters, Christopher Cross, and more recently, Patti LaBelle, Michael MacDonald, and Elvis Costello. Bacharach’s tunes, Look of Love; Living Together, Growing Together; Make It Easy on Yourself, and What the World Needs Now is Love will be featured. This year’s spring concert will also include music by Chuck Mangione, a unique instrumentalist whose flugelhorn playing style catapulted him to fame in the late 1970’s and early 80’s. His song and album entitled, Feels So Good, put him on the charts in 1977, and he enjoyed success well into the ‘80’s and ‘90’s. Land of Make Believe, and Children of Sanchez were two of his more popular hits, and both will be performed at Sunday’s concert. The band hasn’t forgotten its roots in Big Band and Swing era music either, and will include a number of standards on the day, including There’ll Be Some Changes Made, and a very special tribute version of I’ll Be Seeing You. As a special treat, the TCA Big Band & VocalAires’ spring concert will be recorded by JTV studios in Jackson, Michigan, to be later aired on the station’s show “SoundWave,” which shines the spotlight on the area’s rich arts and entertainment scene.
