On Saturday, February 4, the TCA held its fourth annual Cabin Fever Film Fest. This annual event celebrates cinematography created by local youth to college students and even amateur filmmakers. We have received dozens of films over the years and always enjoy watching them with our patrons.
Though we do give out a few awards each year, by no means are we professionals ourselves. From the staff picks to the highly coveted People's Choice award, our Cabin Fever Film awards are just a way for us to say thank you. And we try to recognize filmmakers in all stages of their love of cinematic movies -- from those in the beginning stages to those who have produced a number of high quality films. One Staff Pick was U.P. Climbing & Backpacking the Porkies by Colten Moore. In this film, viewers glimpse the beauty of nature as a “Local Tecumseh graduate travels to the Porcupine Mountains for a four day excursion into nature (and) four boys embrace the wilderness”. The other Staff Pick was Campus Safety by Tim Sparks. This comedic mockumentary film “follow(s) a day in the life of a college campus safety officer”. The People’s Choice was awarded to Kaela Green for the film His & Hers. In this musical, “Love & relationships are not as simple as they seem”. Each film shown at Cabin Fever Film Fest excelled in different ways. Some had excellent dialogue, strong characters, engaging plot, stunning cinematography, comedic timing, amazing props, costumes, visual effects, musical scores. All of it was on display at this year’s film fest. The staff picks were films that appealed to the committee, films that were engaging and that they identified with. These films, for a variety of reasons, captured their attention and imagination – they possessed the ability to transport them while they remained in their seats. Film, like any art form, is subjective. Different films appeal to different people for a variety of reasons, which is why the audience members participate each year in the judging process by casting their vote for the “People’s Choice” award. The ongoing goal of this festival is to foster creativity, allow a space for expression, and create dialogue. We hope you will join us next year, as either a filmmaker or film viewer – add your voice to the conversation.
