Several local performing groups call the TCA home. Find out who they are and what they are about:
The TCA Big Band & VocalAires was initially formed in 2004 as an in-house group at the TCA, intent solely on offering an opportunity for area musicians to share their love of big band music with the community through a few concerts a year. While we still present two concerts at the TCA per year, one in May and one in December, the group has also performed at such diverse places as Lenawee County's annual Relay for Life The Clinton Fall Festival; The Lenawee County Fair; Tecumseh Recreation Department's Music in the Park series; Hickman Cancer Center Fundraiser, Graze to Raise to benefit cancer patients' treatment costs; St. John's Lutheran Church Benefit for the Catherine Herrick Cobb Domestic Violence Center; Toe Tappin' at the Tate; the Tecumseh Technological Park Groundbreaking Ceremony; and as TCA pre-show guests of the Glenn Miller, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Arte Shaw, Benny Goodman, and Cab Calloway Orchestras, as well as Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. The band has performed not only in Lenawee County, but also in Washtenaw, and Jackson Counties in Michigan, and Lucas County in Ohio. As of March 2012, a mere 8 years after its inception, the group has performed more than 90 times.
The volunteer group consist of people from all walks of life, including college and high school band and vocal directors, retirees, business owners, medical industry employees, Tecumseh and Onsted City, and Raisin Township Employees, including the Tecumseh City Fire Chief, a U of M employee, college students, as well as a corporate pilot, and range in age from 19 to 70+ years. Past and present members hail from many local Lenawee County towns including Tecumseh, Adrian, Blissfield, Morenci, Onsted, Manitou Beach, Clinton, and Cement City, as well as Washtenaw County's Ann Arbor, Saline, and Dexter, Hillsdale County's Somerset Center, and Monroe County's Temperance and Monroe.
Adrian College's Director of Bands and Department Chair, Dr. Marty Marks is the group's director and lead alto sax player, with former Tecumseh Schools' Instrumental Music Director and lead tenor sax player Jim Rice, former Hudson Band Director and lead trombone player John Ashley, and former Bedford Schools and Monroe Community College Band Director, and 15 year director of the State of Michigan's MSBOA Paul Stanifer serving as assistants. The group boasts a full big band compliment of five saxes, four trombones, four trumpets, four rhythm players, and six vocalists.
We have a great time performing this music, and hope you'll come along for the ride! For additional information or booking info contact: TCA Big Band Manger Karen Bunch email: techdirector@theTCA.org
Tecumseh Youth Theatre provides experiences and opportunities for the participation live theatre for the area youth. We have a commitment to showcasing youth talent in live theatre productions, giving students the opportunity to perform and learn about multiple facets of theatre production. In addition, TYT strives to bring quality theater productions to the community using youth talent, assisted and supported by experienced, caring adults in an effort to support the arts and bring them to as wide an audience as possible.
TYT presents three shows per season, a high-school aged play or drama, a high school aged musical and a middle-school aged musical. Any youth who lives in the Tecumseh School District area or attends Tecumseh Public Schools is invited to audition for roles in the three shows. The Tecumseh Pops Orchestra was established in 1981 to foster, promote, and
increase the musical knowledge and appreciation of our citizens. The Tecumseh
Community Chorus was established shortly thereafter, providing additional diversity
to our musical repertoire. Since then, the Orchestra and Chorus have presented two
shows per year – the Holiday Concert on the first Sunday in December, and the
Spring Concert on the first Sunday in May.
The musicians of the Orchestra, and the vocalists of the Chorus come from all walks of life. Teachers, retirees,
medical and business professionals, students, homemakers, and many other professions are represented within
our membership. All have various musical backgrounds, from performing professionally to singing in the
shower. There is one driving force that brings us all together, and that is the love of music . . .
New members are always welcome! Weekly rehearsals begin approximately 8-10 weeks before each concert.
